To participate in the Eat Local Challenge, we urge you to eat locally produced foods during the third week of September, 2008.

The rules are simple - eat foods grown in VT or within 100 miles, but you are free to use unlimited spices from anywhere in the world, yeast, baking soda or powder. You also have 0-5 wildcards per day if you must have that cup of coffee, olive oil, or chocolate.

Please remember - there are no food police. We hope everyone will have fun and try their best to eat locally that week.

We will keep you posted in these pages about workshops, classes and more information about the potluck. Stay tuned!

Eat Local – Smart for you, smart for the community

  • Local food tastes good and is good for you

  • Local foods are picked closer to the time they are eaten and are high in vitamins and flavor

  • Local foods aren’t designed to travel, but for taste. Local foods are designed to be picked by a huge industrial machine

  • Eating foods that are less processed foods cuts out preservatives, colorings, and chemicals

  • Eating local can mean trying new foods and new varieties of fruits and vegetables

  • When you know the producers, you know the quality.

  • Socialize! Farm stands and farmer’s markets are a great place to see your neighbors. Create memories by making meals with friends, making jam with kids.

Local food builds community

  • Keep Vermont Green – help build sustainable agriculture

  • Spending locally reinvests in your community

  • Save the planet – shipping foods worldwide uses fossil fuels and adds to the cost to you, and to the planet.
