Eating Locally and the Challenge
Please read this information about the Challenge
Food travels thousands of miles sometimes to make it to your table. Often, we don't know how it was grown, processed, or transported. We are lucky to live in a state that has both good land and good people growing food. When we buy local food - we eat better and we keep Vermont green and growing.
This year's Southwestern Vermont Eat Local Challenge will take place in September. It will start with a community pot luck supper. The actual challenge to eat locally will be held in the third week of September, 2008.
The idea is to eat foods grown within 100 miles or within Vermont.
We are adding to the challenge something that author Bill McKibben calls the "Marco-Polo exception" - this means that the use of salt, pepper, spices, baking soda, baking powder and yeast are not included. Eat locally, spice globally!
The rules also allow 0-5 daily wildcards - meaning, if you must have that cup of coffee, use a wildcard, but try not to exceed 5 in a day.
Of course, there will be no food police. If you have troubles making the plan work, start the next day recommitted. Check out our links to food resources also. food resources
